I'm former law enforcement, an activist, and a victim of gun violence. I have children that I love dearly, when it comes to law enforcement I advise them with these precautions. If law enforcement ever approach you in an unethical way follow their orders and make a mental note of who the officers are; use your pen to fight back. Every law enforcement officer in the community is not bad. Quite frankly, they should be treated with dignity and respect. However, this is my message to officers that are not good, if someone is breaking the law your first reaction shouldn't be deadly force. I know what they taught you in training, but you also have to know when to use your communication skills to de-escalate what you perceive to be a volatile situation. Last but not least, don't apply for the job if you are afraid. When I was working in law enforcement, I de-escalated a lot of volatile situations. Through this book - my story - you will be guided through various scenes of my life that includes family, love and my unbelievable experience as a gun violence victim.

We have all heard people talk about their personal "Hell on earth" and how they have had to deal with their own mental "Hell". If you see Hell as a place of torment and destruction, I can understand what those terms are used. There are so many things vying for our attention and our time, that we sometimes feel as though there's not enough opportunity or time to do the things we need to do or want to do.
For Garry Jones, he knows what its like to live in a place where what is wrong is sometimes easier to do than what is right, and the choices aren't always as clear-cut as we might like. In STRAIGHT OUT OF HELL Book 1 we get a snapshot of Garry's beginnings how he was able to deal with his own insecurities and what it took to push him towards the good that was always inside of him. We see a man grow in confidence and maturity, yet have to deal with his won shortcomings and the consequences of his actions.
What I thought was interesting about the book was we get not only the story but photos to take us through the journey. We see the young Garry grow into being a father and athlete and even see him in the face of his biggest challenges.
There is also an understanding of why the Criminal Justice system appealed to him in school. I won't give that away here, but it does go back to how individuals who are products of a certain environment are drawn to that which they seem to witness and know the most.
The back of the book alludes to an incident that occurs in his life later in the story, but I wonder if it wasn't what would become the motivator for him sharing the story in the first place. In the end we are able to see Garry wrestle with the importance of forgiveness and moving forward and not allowing the hate and pain of the past consume him. It's a struggle that we can all relate to in some form, but I think reading it this way allow us to see we are not alone.
No matter what we are going through or what we have wanted to do in our lives, Garry's journey in Book 1 of his story allows us to know the importance of making the most of each and every day. Failure to do so can mean not just a dream deterred but one that may never have a chance again.
Easy to read and compelling from the beginning, STRAIGHT OUT OF HELL Book 1 takes us on a journey you won't soon forget.
